Vintage Love

December 30, 2016

I would love to share with you my love for vintage fabric as this year comes to a close.

img_0051

I have an ongoing love of making Triple Irish Chain quilts. I completed the top and back for my niece Erica and based and bound it. I gave it to her at her request not quilted and hope to quilt it some day.  This one I am currently working on is for her younger sister Mary Ann. I am cutting the white background fabrics for two additional quilts. One for my niece Emily and hopefully one for me. These one inch strips of fabric put into quilts has been a signature of mine. img_0050

This white fabric is a little thin. I hope this block holds up over the years. I do love the music pattern it has and I am able to use it in Leah’s musical quilt back as well. img_0052

Look at this beautiful fabric. There is nothing like it!img_0053

At this time of the year I like to bring out my vintage crocheted containers. I thrifted this one this past year at Value Village for $1.49. Ohhhh, I like it so much! img_0055

Look at these fabulous vintage cards and papers used in this box. img_0056

I got a new camera for Christmas which is one of the reasons I have not done a post in a long time. My other camera the lense is not retracting and of course it would cost more to have it repaired than to just purchase a new one. I don’t like this concept of our throw away society. I wish I could find someone who tinkers with electronics and would be willing to fix it just for fun!  I have to thank Scott for getting me a beautiful camera. Look at the detail it catches! Yay!!!! It has been a tough year for me. I have been battling cancer since the end of March. I still have a ways to go with treatments but so far so good. I am looking forward to 2017. I have to thank the 30 plus people who have followed me on Flickr and commented on my pictures this year. So many people have sent me gifts and cards it is sooooooo appreciated. Just when I would feel down I would get a greeting card or gift in the mail. Thank you all so much. img_0057

Thrifted Quilt Blocks

It is not often I see quilts anymore at the thrift stores I go to.
I got amazingly lucky this month.
So do you think I could find a green to coordinate with the other iris blocks?

I don’t think the tan plaid was with this project. It may be from the same quilter. It was not in the case that had all the blocks on it. I think it does go well with the color of the background fabric.

IMG_4169.JPG

I think this quilter wanted to do a quilt as you go pattern but did not realize the front of the blocks get sewn from the back side. What they did was sew all 4 pieces of fabric along with the batting  from the front. I will need to take all of this apart.

Neighbor's Iris.

I love irises and look forward to making progress on this quilt and have it out when the irises bloom.
Beautiful morning and now the rains

This quilt could use two more blocks but I am not the best machine embroiderer even though I have a Bernina machine that has all kinds of stitch designs.
This iris would be my model for another block.

October Thrift Haul

November 1, 2014

On this first day of November I would like to share my items purchased this past month at thrift stores.

IMG_1029Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mitten. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. These are a few of my favorite things!

The bins are always a necessity for me but….. I can no longer move too many of them at one time. I was rearranging my garage and moving storage around to fit the boat into the garage and threw out my back. I have spent the past two weeks recovering and it has not been without a few tears.

Bins large Sterilite $2.99 with no cover

Small bin with lid  .79

These two were actually vintage book store purchases

– Embroidered Torso Stand $3.50

– Fabric Torso Stand $4.25IMG_1037I see a lot of dolls at thrift stores but these two called out to me.

Country Garden Fairy $1.69

IMG_1041Matryoshka doll also known as Russian nesting doll or babushka doll – Uncle Sam.$1.99  It was over by the Christmas items that are just starting to show up at the thrifts.

IMG_1030

I found two items for my Pyrex collection – actually five but 3 are not in the above photo.

Corning Ware P-14-B 400ml dish with Pyrex lid $1.49

I could not pass up another red fridgie for .79

IMG_1033If anyone knows how to add luster to them let me know???

I think I now have 4 of these!

I did use them to make Friendship bread a few years ago.

*

******Christmas * * * * * *

I like to add a candle head Santa each year. I have so many sometimes I do not know if I already have it or not.
This one is so cute and was only 39 cents. I just had to purchase it.

IMG_1038The Christmas ornament is a Scottie Dog 39 cents also that will hopefully some day soon have the name RIO on is for Jane and Mara for their Doggie for Christmas.

Rio

Here is little Rio 8 years ago already!

****************Scrapbooking ********************

I also enjoy scrapbooking and purchased ribbon for 39 cents each and the Autumn Stickers for 79 cents which have sunflowers and squirrels.

IMG_1034

IMG_1035My final purchases were books

Christmas Memories A Folk Art Celebration  79cents

Christmas Cats Lesley Anne Ivory

Halloween Crafts book called Ghostly Frights for Halloween Nights

and a Spanish/English dictionary 99c

IMG_1039IMG_1040

I have been collecting blue glass for years. Two days a clear glass pitcher with a beautiful blue glass handle was bumped off the table and went crashing to the floor. I purchased this pitcher to replace it for $8.99. It is a little more expensive than I would like but … oh well.IMG_1032

You can see the cabinet I have filled with blue glass.  I have wanted to take every piece out and wash the inside shelves…..I finally did it a few days ago while I was recovering from my back. It took a lot longer because I had to move slowly. I got it done and it looks wonderful. I can now turn the inside light on in the evening and feel good about the collection.

IMG_1031

This glass does not match anything I have but again it was 39c so I got it. Often the blue glassware is about $1.69 so I did not pass on it. It will get used.

IMG_1042Does this look familiar to anyone? My mom used a sprinkle bottle when she ironed the clothes back in the 60s. A bit of nostalgia for this old gal!

There are two items still out in my car. An amazing Nutcracker wooden gate that could go in front of a fireplace when not in use.

I window with quilt pieces in the glass panes. It is older and was 14.99. I like it though. I may freshen it up a bit but I thought it would motivate me to possibly make something similar.

I hope you enjoyed my little thrifting treasures. It makes me happy. If you have thrifted any items similar to these feel free to comment and add a link to your post. HAPPY THRIFTING!

Thrifting Treasures

  IMG_3254

So you see the knot in the wood plank on the deck. It jumps out at me. Leads down to the woodchucks, hedgehogs, and racoons under the deck. Good thing I don’t see an eye looking back at me!

IMG_3259  I paid $3.99 for them. Levi 501s. I just had to growing child put them on and they fit. Only thing is they button up instead of have a zip which I hadn’t noticed. It will be OK. He’ll grow out of them in a couple months anyway!

My version of a May Day basket.[GML2A1] When I was in girl scouts and a little girl we made May Day baskets and took them to the nursing home and handed them out.  I will never forget the experience.

It was the only time I have ever seen someone with hydrocephalus or “water on the brain”. We sang songs to all the residents and walked around and chatted with people. I remember all the smiles on their faces like it was yesterday.

IMG_1818

IMG_1820

Yesterday I wrote about the box of linens my aunt gave to me. They were her mother’s. This was at one time a lovely curtain. I suppose in a kitchen. Unfortunately something burned a hole through it and there are stains on it.

I am not certain what I will do with it yet. It is lovely as a backdrop for photos. GML1

IMG_1817

I thrifted this pretty little plate a few weeks ago. Any time I see a quilt motif on something I am bound to get it!

IMG_1821

My lilies outside are cold. It is raining and then a moment later it snows a bit and then it rains again. I could see my breath when I walked outside this morning.

IMG_1838

I haven’t pulled the weeds away because I heard it was supposed to snow again and be in the 40s for about 3 days.

IMG_1822       IMG_1826

IMG_1864

This small applique pillow belonged to my friend Jan.

IMG_1816

One of Martha’s aprons. I love the vintage fabric!

When I woke up this morning I was thinking of taking pictures of the many baskets I have. Baskets like the one above with the quilted kitty in it.

IMG_1827

I then thought I would go through some of my quilt books and take pictures of basket quilts. I bought this book for only $1.99. It is one of my favorites. The quilt ideas are fantastic!

IMG_1829When I saw this pink basket quilt it dawned on me I do have a vintage flower quilt. I would say they are either in flower pots or in flower baskets!

IMG_1831

I thought this linen piece of Grandma Martha’s looked like fruit. L2 The name of the pink quilt is Fruit Baskets.

IMG_1868      IMG_1873

IMG_1866

I like the outside border on this quilt. I looked at all the flower blocks and only a few even had pots/baskets that had any fabric remaining.

IMG_1868

The fabric is pretty intact on the pots on the lower right side of the quilt.
This is the area with the least wear and tear. Literally!

    IMG_1872

IMG_1871   I like this block because the center circle wore off and you can still see the true colors of the original fabric. note the difference between the petal area that was exposed to the elements and the part that was under the circle.

  IMG_1869

I would like to make some basket quilts.

Martha’s Embroidery Work
This is the 3rd piece I pulled out of the box.

There are some buds appearing on the plants outside.

The forsythia in my front yard.

There are three peony plants

IMG_1714

This was two days ago. Do you see the little rascal! He has been chewing on my tulips. He is just to the left of the bench.

IMG_1846

Once they open it is going to be glorious out front!

IMG_1785

In the back the lilac bushes look like this. I spent part of my weekend cleaning out under the bushes. They run the entire lengths of the back yard so I only got about half done! I don’t get much help in this area!

IMG_1766  I had put my metal shelf with soil outside for 2-3 days but had to bring it back in last night.

The lettuce is starting to take off. I am going to try and transplant it into the planter boxes and have them up on the deck railing like last year….to keep the little critters from eating it all!

Tonight as I was putting the box of linens away I counted

there are 106 different sets of linens. I’ve shown parts of about 10 of them here.

She loved linens almost as much I as do!

Lucky for me.

Thanks Kay for the wonderful gift.

and just to say…

April Thrift Haul

May 1, 2013

Quite a few things have come into the house the past two weeks

Originally uploaded by Q_uilted T_hrifted

I have managed to accumulate quite a few things. It motivated me to gather all the clothes our son has grown out of. He had three pair of snowpants that no longer fit him! I now have six bags and boxes of items. Two I took to the thrift store tonight.  Tomorrow I will try and sell some children’s clothes at Once Upon A Child. I will then make a large box for my niece’s girlfriend’s son who is a few years younger than mine.

IMG_1759

This little box was only 39c. I like to decorate for Memorial day and the 4th of July. I have a large hat box that is circular I would like to try this paint and stencil technique on.

IMG_1760

I picked up my second Pyrex Container.

IMG_1763

IMG_1764

Pyrex container and the Corelle dishes I picked up at a garage sale.

IMG_1765

I stopped at Bibles For Missions thrift store and picked up this cool jug.
I want to hang it in one of my flower beds.

IMG_1768

I picked up this single Correlle dish. It is the pattern that I acquired from my dad.

Pyrex canisters are now on my love list - 1 qt Store 'N' See container "Wildflowers"

IMG_1774  Last Thursday I stopped at a garage sale and picked up the Hermoine doll and accessories. She cost $2.00.

*

*

I also got an owl necklace for only 10c which is cool because I just gave another owl necklace that I really liked to my niece for her birthday two weekends ago. You can see part of my owl collection here.

IMG_1810

I also picked up a small baggie of these fabrics.

IMG_1793

It was for a dollar or less. I don’t have any of them in my stash. The yellow ones will go in my Sunflower quilt.

********************************************

I went to a church rummage sale with my friend Carol and found the little wooden owl on the lower left corner. I think it was only a quarter. I then bought some red polka dot fabric that I didn’t really need but wanted to be supportive of my friend’s church.

Carol gave me this plant last fall and it has started to take off with new growth in the last two weeks. She keeps hers outside on her deck in the summer.

So will I!

The young man in the photo is my older son. This is one of his high school graduation portraits. It is my favorite.

The blue bottle is part of a collection of blue glass items I have. I’ve been thinking of putting up a display by the front window in the livingroom so the sun will shine through them.

The table in the top photo also has two pillow covers in a blue on white print. They will either go out on the patio or end up on the couch upstairs.

IMG_1779   Whenever I see this Libby’s Gold Leaf glass I picked them up for my sister’s collection. I may just have to keep a few pieces for myself though.

I believe my mom got some pieces like this as wedding gifts back in the 50s.

My sister has so many pieces. She likes to buy off of Ebay. I only purchased a few quilts off Ebay over 10 years ago and it was not the best experience so I haven’t done it since.

I enjoy going to thrift stores so much that I really don’t need to purchase off Ebay.

Maybe some day I will sell a few things though!!!!!

IMG_1777

IMG_1778The huge box that you see in the top picture is from my Aunt Kay. It is filled to the top with linens and aprons. I will dedicate an entire post to the wonderful items. We called her mom Grandma Martha even though she was not biologically our grandma.  Two of the aprons are laying on the top of the box! They are just fantastic colors!

I hope this DVD will motivate me.

There are a few other things on the table in the first photo.

Happy Birthday paper plates 39c

Cat Quilt book

A Spray bottle for ironing.

Two Monkey pillow cases.

A Monet pillow case that goes with my spring bedding.

The green glass bowl that goes with the plates I picked up last week. 99c

this could be a bowl or a flower vase

Yesterday I looked at some skirts for myself. I like spring time for purchasing some clothes for myself. I earned a $10.00 coupon for the thrift store when I took in two bags of donations tonight.

Since so much has come in this month I have six bags and boxes that need to go out!

loads and loads of stuff to go to the thrift store and to try and sell at OUC

The best part of the day was completing the third block to a quilt I am working on and setting up parts of the next seven blocks.

Galleries on Flickr – I just love this feature!

April 11, 2013

My first Gallery was this one on OWLs. I suspect there was a photo by Jude but it is no longer there. I love her work so much. Maybe it will show up in a book. I hope she writes one.

I have a small collection of Owls I keep on display. Blogged about here.

I like my owl home too!

I have 4 bells as well but no recent photo. (see below added photo 4-24-13) Here is one of them. My MIL collected bells. I don’t buy bells at all unless they are owls.

owl bell

My second Owl Gallery has quilts, wall hangings and other owl items.

Some day I will make something with an owl theme.

Here is one of my S&P Owls. I love it because it reminds me of my grandma’s collection. There is S&P in the 1st gallery above.

Salt and Pepper Shakers

JAN 1 2012

The third Owl Gallery is mainly owls on fabric there is a bunting that is fantastic!

Owl Luv IV again quilts, pillows and ornaments.

I guess I love owls. They are pretty popular right now.

Here is a necklace I purchased. Wouldn’t it be cool to do a rubbing of this on fabric and then embroider around it.

Owl Luv

When I go thrifting I always keep my eyes open for Owls. I don’t like everything I see. There are just certain items that call out to me.

Update: 4-24-13

I added another bell to my collection. I also gave the metal owl necklace above to my niece for her 16th birthday. She likes owls too!

I now have five

This owl Christmas ornament started a whole new fascination.

Owl Ornament

This wooden one is really nice.

Owl Ornament

I now have at least  10 glass owl ornaments that go on their own tree. I usually keep it on a dresser in my bedroom.

New owl from my son

I like the glow of the lights and the sparkle off the tree.

I bought her last year - one for me and one for my mom.

I got this for $1.69. I may make it into pillows for out in our screened in patio.

IMG_1198

I have always fancied quilt projects that have lace,  doilies or hankerchiefs in them.

IMG_1200

See why I like this so much!!!!

IMG_1212They both wintered outside and have a very nice patina to them. I keep them in the screened in patio.

IMG_1199

It was definitely a beginning quilter that made this wall hanging. You can really tell by the back.

IMG_1201I don’t think the piece was basted at all. It looks like they may have started from the sides and worked toward the middle.

It was a labor of love and I know we all have a learning curve. Don’t we?!?!#*^/\^

IMG_1194

I like these colors together. Green and purple. It will be like the lilac bushes in another month.

IMG_1202

I ran a dowel through the sleeve and put it on

the door going into my quilt room.

IMG_1203

It will stay there until the

weather warms up and we can get the patio furniture out.

IMG_1191-001     IMG_1210

Pretty soon the pots will have flowers in them. I hope to spend a few weekends out on the deck working on my scrappy bargello!

The first link for the scrappy bargello was back in 2008. Here is how it looked last September.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Please leave a note if you stop by for a visit. I would love to hear from you. QT
